At the recently concluded ITU Regional Radio Communication Conference (RRC) for Africa and the Middle East held in Geneva from May 15 - June 16, the United Arab Emirates were allocated some 225 digital terrestrial frequencies in the analog to digital switch over of television broadcasts.
The UAE delegation was headed by Tariq Abdulkarim Al Awadhi, Director of Spectrum Management, at the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) plus members from the TRA, Emirates Media, Dubai Media, and Sharjah TV.
With much preparatory work completed on frequency testing and impact on neighbouring countries, the UAE is now in the process of planning to offer the frequencies to the present and new broadcasters.
A key issue at the conference was the protection of analog terrestrial broadcasting from digital interference until the year 2015 to ease the transition between the technologies.
All conference participants signed a new treaty outlining terrestrial TV channels provision.
