BBC Japan in Big Trouble

March 21

In London, Darren Childs, MD, BBC Worldwide Global Channels has had to make an embarrassing announcement to the effect that the BBC Japan Channel will close within weeks unless new backers are found. The channel only started in December 2004 with much fanfare.

It appears that JMC, the BBC's local partner in Japan wants to pull out for financial reasons. JMC shareholders are major media players, Dentsu, Jiji Press and Kyodo.

Panic buttons are being pushed at the BEEB to find alternative suitors to keep the channel on air, after BBCWW says it was not consulted on the move by JMC before they made their decision.
