Digital Broadcasters | CASBAA 2006 Conference, Speakers Finalised

Digital broadcast grouping - CASBAA, The Cable & Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia in announcing the guest speaker line up at the forthcoming conference program for the CASBAA Convention 2006 in Hong Kong, uses a description that sounded more of a headline for an International One Day Sports event rather than a conference!

"Heavy hitter line-up for CASBAA Convention 2006" is how the conference “From Bandwidth to Brandwidth” is tagged. (Note the catchy conference labelalong with which, CASBAA has created a new word: "brandwidth")

In the same vernacular, CASBAA goes on to list the "global heavyweight speakers" as follows:

Charlie Ergen, Chairman and Founder of US DTH pioneer, Echostar; Michael Fries, CEO of multi-national pay-TV platform operator Liberty Global; Ho-Chen Tan, Chairman of Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom; Irwin Gotlieb, Global CEO of ad agency GroupM; Kip Meek, Chief Policy Partner of trend-setting UK regulator OFCOM; Randall Dark, President, HD Vision Studios; Sofyan Djalil, Minister of State for Information & Communications, Indonesia; and Wei Wen Bin, President of Hunan Satellite.

So now you know. You make your mind up as to how big a punch they pull!

CASBAA Chairman, Marcel Fenez also has a way with words when he said of the event: “While the market is rightly dazzled by the promise of the new technologies, our most urgent task is to identify new business models and the most creative content as we develop a better understanding of what is achievable within the diverse Asian marketplace. That’s the theme for CASBAA 2006.”

While featuring dedicated sessions on South Asia (India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) and a look at the key emerging markets of Indonesia and Vietnam, along with special Forums on IPTV, Mobile Video and HDTV, “the annual CASBAA Convention is an unparalleled meeting place and a ‘Must Attend’ date for everyone’s diary,” said Mr Fenez.

As ever, CASBAA’s “must have” markets of China and India will be heavily featured, along with a special Session on Japan.

There will of course be the CASBAA TV Advertising Awards 2006.

Reading between the lines -- this announcement from CASBAA is talking one big exercise to find out all the new feasible revenue streams for developing technologies coming into use, such as DVB-H and T-DMB video applications.

Pity they just can't say it in plain simple English!
